Naming a business, especially one in the financial services industry, can be a source of frustration or inspiration, as noted in a recent Investor’s Business Daily article. Co-founder and principal, Dave Clayman, chose Twelve Points as a tribute to the 12 Points of the Boy Scout Law.
“A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent,” said Clayman. Clayman was recently awarded the National Eagle Scout Association Outstanding Eagle Award after being nominated by the Spirit of Adventure Council, which supports 13,000 Scouts and 5,000 volunteers.
While the names of other firms are based on concepts, images, or last names, Twelve Points, which was mentioned in the IBD article, achieves higher meaning with clients the more they learn and work with the brand.
“Being a Scout has had a profound effect on my life, and I’m proud to say it’s had a profound effect on how we do business, too,” he adds. “Our clients trust us to be loyal to their best interests, to be respectful and kind in that relationship, and to be brave when it comes to having tough conversations, and resourceful when it comes to their money. I could keep going. Every day I’m in the office, I find another way to apply the 12 Points of Scout Law to what we do at this firm.”
Every member of the team at Twelve Points is committed to giving back and serving others. Like Dave, Twelve Points team member Jared Bilodeau also became an Eagle Scout (the highest rank achievable) at a young age. It’s that connection that attracted Jared to the firm.
“He called his team a family,” said Bilodeau in his blog post, which further outlines the Scout relationship. “This is what I wanted in the long term, but I didn’t expect to find it right out of school. I saw the passion that everyone there had for helping people, which is the most important thing to me.”
While not everyone at the firm is a Scout, we all exemplify the 12 Points in everything we do, from how we serve clients to how we interact with each other. While we’d do the same good business if we had another name, we’re happy to call it like it is.
